I have been doing some more screenprinting and adding some extra special touches with hand drawn images over the top. All of my designs are original and I really love the whole process of creating prints. My challenge over this summer is do some lino block prints and move into some more challenging pieces.......

I have printed on raw silk for the flags and bird, combined with vintage look linen with part of a doillie and also used some luxe embellishments. The singlets are some cool boy's designs I have been playing with entitled "Space Robots".

I have been doing a few canvasses to bring some new and different art to our shop - here are some pics of some recent ones. The landscape is called 'Looking to Facing Island' and all these are in the shop. The Kokeshi Doll canvasses and a mixture of painting and collage and were a lot of fun to do. I will soon have some of these Kokeshi dolls on paper in shadowboxes. These are very cute for a little girl's room...

I (Toni Spencer) have been attempting to spend more time painting, these two canvas's are large, 1.2 metres by 1 metre. I had a lot of fun painting them - it felt great to be painting again - instead of just making candles! The first painting is called "Take Five" and the painting of the woman is called "Freedom."

Well we have drawn the winner of our hamper prize - but as she is away until next week we will have to wait until we tell her before announcing it! So watch the blog to find out who....

In our shop we have some new art by Toni Spencer - and Toni has also been making some other exciting new creations which make great gifts - come in and have a look in the Pod Shop.

To complement our range of products we now have some beautiful smelling hand made soaps in our shop. These soaps are hand made in Australia and unlike commercial soaps they do not contain any animal products, propolene glycol or sodium laurel sulphate. Instead they use ingredients such as coconut oil, palm oil and essential oils for aromatherapy and well being.

The fragrances are sourced from ingredients such as organic lavender from the Mediterranean, organic peppermint from the virgin soils of Tasmania, Arquiletz clay from France and Australian bush clays.. the list goes on.

It was a great day, lots of people and a great response to the news about our shop opening next Friday. Pod Collective Market - Boyne Island

Pod Collective recently held a one day exhibition and sale of all our creations at the Boyne Island Shopping Centre. We had such a great time and such a positive response we have decided to open the "Pod Collective Market" which will be open every Friday (9am-2pm) and Saturday (9am - 2.30pm) or by appointment. We are hoping to open on the 5th of June

We will have a great range of handmade and unique giftware, art, candles, jewellery, kids wall hangings, designer women's and children's clothing and accessories. We are excited to offer and outlet for our unique products locally and make our products more accessible to everyone in the area. My name is Sharon Farcich. I was born and lived most of my life in Perth. About 3 years ago we decided to make a sea change and move to Queensland. Having a Grandfather who was a sign writer and a Father who specialised in Technical drawing I have spent most of my life around art. I have enjoyed painting/drawing for most of my life and have recently drawn inspiration from my two young children to create the clocks and wall hangings that I am presenting with the POD Collective.

My name is Sacha Harrang. I am originally from Sydney, Australia.
I have travelled extensively overseas. I was able to do so at a very young age, as my father is a pilot. I have travelled and lived in many locations along the eastern border of Australia. I also managed to have had a 3 year stint out west in Cloncurry. I am continually amazed at how diverse the landscape and the people are in Australia.

I have been painting both with oil and acrylic based paints for 25 years and I think travel has helped me broaden my style in my art from classic to abstract. I really enjoy trying new things and using things from nature to get my inspiration.
Fifteen years ago I started to do leadlight mirrors and copper foiled lampshades. I have recently started in this field again and I am enjoying it immensely.
I have lived in this beautiful area now for almost 3 years and have only just starting participating in the art community with the Poddies. I hope to continue my painting and stained glass works and sell them locally as well as travelling to Brisbane to sell my art there as I have been doing the last 3 years.

The pendants are made using glass tiles and Japanese and other beautiful papers. They are sold on a leather cord. I will have a range of these available at out Riverside Market and they are $20 with the leather necklace.

I also have some new clutch purses which make a great small bag for kids. These are fully lined and the zip is 18cm long. The fabric is covered in PVC and the reverse side is a dark denim.

I have finished it of with a doilie flower badge and the centre button of the badge was from an old velvet cord jacket...

The blog may have been a bit quiet for a while, but rest assured, we poddies haven't.
We have had quite a few get togethers over the past few months, and a few challenges as well.

Diaries and baby blocks

These are some pocket diaries for 2009 and are covered in Japanese Yuzen paper and contact. They look beautiful and would make a great Christmas present. I'll have these available at the POD exhibition on the 29th November.

Fabric baby blocks made to provide some sensory stimulation for a baby with bright colours and a little bell inside. 4 ribbon tags give baby something to hold onto and they could also be used to clip the block to a pram. The fabric used are Japanese cottong and vintage print cottons, with a bit of Amy Butler thrown in. The squares are approx 3 and a half inches square.

The Pod Postcard Challenge

At one of our recent Pod gatherings we decided that a few challenges were a good way of keeping our creativity flowing. The postcard chalenge was the smaller of the two challenges we agreed on.
We selected a member's name from a hat, and then had to find "something" to give that person from which they had to create a postcard size piece of art. The postcard when finished, would then be presented back to the person who gave you the object. We thought this was a great way of having fun, being creative, and getting to own a piece of each other's art.
Ali challenged Carolyne's creativity by giving her two plastic bread clips, Ali recieved a lovely piece of fabric that Carolyne had collected on her wanderings around the world, I (Toni) gave Michelle a coin with a hole in the centre that my son found during a treasure hunt, and Michelle gave me an attractive length of black and tan cord.
We met at Carolyne's for morning tea, where we exchanged our postcards, while enjoying the tea party atmosphere Carolyne had created for us outside in her garden. It was great fun exchanging cards, and seeing what the others had created. We were all very happy with the postcard we received, and left happily with our new pieces of art. The results of our "postcarding" can be seen here.
We have started a new postcard challenge, and hope to use these small works of art in an upcoming exhibition that we are starting to plan.

I prefer abstraction but sometimes it's good for me to produce a few chalk pastels just to "keep my eye in." This is the first for a while and was created for an older friend who collects teddy bears. This is her favourite bear Edward. Another friend of hers said "She will probably cry." (hopefully happy tears!)

Pyramid Purse

This purse is made from some good quality Japanese fabric and is fully lined. A perfect size for your phone and keys, or other small items you need to carry. I am making these purses with walking in mind as they are a perfect size to hold keys in and some change in case you happen to walk past a coffee shop and you smell freshly ground coffee and see some really nice looking cake. A natural leather wrist strap with a wooden bead finishes it off. Look out for many more of these, they are a lot of fun to make!

Butterfly in Pink, Purple and Yellow

Today I finished this butterfly and another similar one, for a friend's two daughters. I used to make a lot of these types of creations, but our candle making business got too busy, and I had to start turning away the work.
It has been nice re-visiting the process, and I do think I will make the occassional one from time to time. It is quite a time-consuming process, the images need to be cut out from 6mm MDF board, sanded, painted, vanished and then the antena and mirror tiles added. There is also quite a bit of work in preparing the backs for hanging. I would never make a fortune from them, that is why the pleasure now comes from creating something that little people enjoy. The most common complaint I have had from people, is that their children just won't leave them on their walls - they want to take them down and play with them. Although it is hard to sometimes avoid thinking about the dollar value of an item - I personally believe creativity always flows best when money is not the focus. Art and creations are meant to be enjoyed, if we are lucky enough to be able to create paintings and other creations that bring people pleasure, then we are very blessed indeed.

I made this collage with lots of papers made from plant material such as bamboo, banana and mango leaf, hemp, and recycled silk, also used Yuzen paper, embroidery thread and sepia ink.

Heaven Scent Candles

My name is Toni and I am delighted to be a part of the Pod Collective. It is lovely to be working with a group of talented and motivated artists, and even though we are a new group - already I am finding that the energy being generated by the collective is helping keep me much more focused on art and creativity.

Today pod member, and new friend Carolyne ( of Ruby Lime design) came to my house to take photographs of some of the candles that I make with my business partner Carrie. Carolyne has a fantastic eye for detail and below are some of the beautiful images she took. I am new to the world of blogging, so Carolyne also showed me how to make this "entry" and she uploaded the photographs. A huge thank you Carolyne!

When I became part of the Pod Collective, I didn't actually intend on showing any of our candles here, while I enjoy making them immensely, I view them more as a business venture, rather than a true reflection of my artistic expression. For me, natural soy candles have been a way of releasing me from feeling the burden or need to make money from my art. I now happily say no to commissions, and only paint what I want to - it is an extremely liberating experience!

For those who don't know anything about soy candles, they are a natural alternative to paraffin based candles (which are made from petrol by-products). Fragrant candles created using soy wax, smell delicious and are non-carcinogenic. I always warn people that they are however addictive!

Carrie and I have been making soy candles for over a year, and the learning in that time has been immense. We are developing a strong market base in our local and extended community, but to expand even further we need to develop our packaging, so if anyone reading this has any ideas, or knows of some good contacts, I would be delighted to hear from you. fabric covered pegs and making old things new

A friend asked me to revamp her necklace so I found another use for Yuzen paper. I covered the cube in this green and gold patterned paper then finished it with acrylic resin for a glassy dimensional finish. Then I covered 4 of the beads with tiny pieces of the same paper for a decoupage effect then lacquered them. It now looks a lot different to when I first saw it!

These pegs are covered in Japanese fabric and I am loving making them. Pictured is one of my cards which is on my other etsy shop http://www.artbycaro.etsy.com/ and the candle is an amazing scented candle 'fresh coffee' by Heaven Scent Candles (soon to be on this blogsite!).

These are my newest creation. Precious Pegs - beautiful paper and fabric covered pegs that are magnetic clips for your fridge. Use them to brighten up your kitchen or give as a great gift. These are a lot of fun to make, with so many great papers and fabrics to choose from!
